Round-Up of the Week Friday 13th January

100px-Yellow_ribbon.svgIt’s been a quiet couple of weeks since the Christmas break. The New Year is always a time for reflection of what we’ve achieved and where we are headed in the coming months. Apologies for the silence on my part, I only managed to say a Happy New Year to everyone on Twitter, however, I hope that 2017 brings peace and joy to you all.

Last Friday I didn’t get chance to blog because we spent the day at Yellow Ribbon, a charity operating in the Telford and Shrewsbury area supporting people released from prison. It was an amazing and enjoyable day to hear about another charity’s success and we were made very welcome. First off we met at their furniture shop where they train people to restore pieces of donated furniture for re-sale. Trainees learn skills like french polishing, re-upholstery and renovation right through to retail skills and customer service. The charity also have some accommodation over the shop, a safe place for people to live with mentoring support at the critical time of release. We then went into Shrewsbury to have lunch at their cafe in the Riverside shopping mall. Home made soup…delicious. The mall is slowly being occupied by social enterprises which are bringing it back to life. It’s so good to see. We came into contact with Yellow Ribbon a week or so before Christmas as a couple of people needed some mentoring support in the Dudley area which were able to help with. It must be difficult to find yourself at the station a week before Christmas with no clue of how things are going to be at home. Another example of what can be achieved when we all work together.  Christmas time can bring such joy but also isolation and loneliness too and in 2016 we saw both in equal measure.

As we look ahead we are looking forward to meeting with people, building and strengthening relationships with the aim of helping those in need through difficult times and circumstances. We particularly hope that our Youth mentoring work will flourish and grow alongside partners such as Top Church Training.

Finally I’d  like to thank all of our supporters because of one thing I’m certain – whatever the year we just couldn’t do it without you!  Happy 2017!
